Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany, Italy.
His dad was a banker, making his family middle class in the social hierarchy at
the time. Michelangelo started studying grammar, but hated it, and became an
apprentice to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. By the next year, he was getting
the same pay as his teacher. When he was 13, in 1489, Ghirlandaio sent him to the Humanist Academy at the request of Lorenzo Medici, who in coincidence had founded the academy. Lorenzo was a bigwig in Italy at the time and most of his family as well. They were bankers whom had taken over the cities’ politics, and while in power spent a lot of money funding the arts. Lorenzo died in April of 1492, which forced Michelangelo to lose his status and move back home with his father. I chose this artist because his work is very colorful, and he has very many details in all of his work. Also, it seems as if he has very much meaning and theirs a story behind every peice of work, and I like that because it keeps me thinking.
